PRESERVING THE FAMILY ALBUM

A new home.

This is an archive of hidaka-gordon.com. The modern homepage opens onto a separate historical collection, so the original family stories stay rooted in their own time.

What has been preserved

The family photo index, original descriptions and posting dates, photographs recovered so far, and the January 1999 homepage. Gallery images are locally preserved files, not links that depend on the old domain continuing to work.

What time left behind

Some retrieved pictures are small thumbnails. Other files are still pending or need another retrieval attempt. The later Picasa albums have no matching captures in the search completed so far. These different states are marked separately.

The original 1999 layout is presented without its old scripts or plug-ins. Unrecovered graphics are labeled in place. Its address, ages, email details, and outbound links are historical.

Sources and dates

Bruce recalls creating the family website around 1996–97. Surviving source pages describe picture uploads from around August 1997. Read the earlier upload index. The January 25, 1999 date identifies a surviving Wayback homepage snapshot, rather than the site’s launch. The exact launch date is not independently confirmed. Content is being restored from the original backup and the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine captures. Each album links back to its archived source. The main album index was captured on August 18, 2018, and includes posts from 1998–2007 plus an album of 1997 photographs. Posting dates can differ from the date a photograph was taken.

Restoration status

Checkpoint saved 2026-10-05 21:32:07 UTC.

This is an incomplete restoration checkpoint. The archive is still being restored, with pending files and retry attempts tracked below.

Wayback inventory checkpoint

The following counters describe the archived-capture inventory saved on October 5, 2026 at 18:04 UTC. Backup restoration and the earlier-host collections are tracked separately below. An archive record awaiting retrieval may now have a corresponding backup image.

Unattempted files are still pending. An unsuccessful attempt is not proof that a file is permanently lost. The six original January 1999 graphics named img0.gif–img5.gif were not found in the available capture catalog. No matching captures were found for the later Picasa-linked albums.

Counts describe files and versions in archive records, rather than the total number of photographs originally on the site. Original pages may reference additional uncaptured images. The detailed record distinguishes pending files, failed attempts, and references without a catalog match.

Damaged historical versions

These original bytes match the archived files but do not fully decode. They are kept for preservation and are not displayed as intact photographs. A clean version is used in the album whenever one survives.

Original backup restoration

The family’s original backup is now being verified and restored. This checkpoint incorporates 73 source-linked photo groups, 42 historical graphics and 6 cleanly decoded films from the first verified transfer. These overlap some archive recoveries and are not added blindly to the counts above.

The main family index retains 215 entries. Separate underwater collections retain their own source context. Larger source-linked pictures replace redundant thumbnails; thumbnail-only survivors remain visible until better copies are recovered.

The backup includes img0.gif–img5.gif from a later-preserved site version. They are shown with the original graphics, without claiming they are the exact missing January 1999 capture bytes. See the recovered artwork.

The earlier family website

Seven separately sourced upload-history entries from 1997–98 are preserved, including 64 recovered photographs across three collections. The remaining image references distinguish catalog gaps from retries. Explore the early years.
